Students at Drive-In

As soon as students on the New England High School Summer Program finished their first dance practice Thursday afternoon, they ran down the hill to play volleyball. Admissions Counselor Jean Guerreiro (鈥22) and Head Prefect Andrew Rossi (鈥13) headed up the teams. 鈥淪tudents at TAC have access to a wide variety of sports and fitness equipment,鈥 said Mr. Guerreiro. 鈥淲e really want to showcase that to our Summer Program attendees.鈥 In addition to volleyball, basketball, rock wall climbing, and swimming were also available. 鈥淚 love all the options we have at rec,鈥 said Michele A. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to choose sometimes!鈥

After recreation, students sat down to a dinner of cream sherry chicken, wild rice, and asparagus. Midway through the meal, prefect Stephen Brown (鈥25) made an announcement: Study period would be short today because the night鈥檚 entertainment was a drive-in movie! Attendees cheered, excited at the prospect of a film under the stars. Although study time was briefer than usual, students made the most of it, carefully reading selections from Pascal, St. Thomas, and Fabre. 鈥淚鈥檓 so interested to hear what my classmates think of Pascal,鈥 said James H.

As students finished their readings, prefects began driving them over to the Northfield Drive-In. Tucked behind a stand of pine trees on Rt. 10, the movie theater has been serving up films and memories for over three decades. Programmers were delighted by the retro venue, spreading out on chairs and blankets. 鈥淲e just love having the high schoolers come,鈥 said Julia Wiggin, one of the owners of Northfield Drive-In. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really one of the highlights of the summer.鈥

While attendees waited for the movie to start, they headed to the snack bar for fries, mozzarella sticks, fried dough, and candy. As the sun set, the movie began. El Cid takes place in Spain in 1080, and tells the story of a heroic knight, Rodrigo, who brings together Christians and Moors alike to protect his country. Programmers sat entranced as they entered the world of the film, swept away by the story. As the credits rolled, the group cheered, both out of excitement and appreciation. Then all loaded into buses and cars back to their residence halls for lights out. 鈥淭oday was so much fun,鈥 said Grace J. 鈥淓very day here is awesome!鈥
